The Elgin , was Sears and Roebucks brand name outboard motor. The first Elgin went on sale in 1946. It was a brand new Outboard Motor, engineered and manufactured by the West Bend Outboard Motor Company. The plant was located in Hartford, Wisconsin, the old Kissel auto plant. The Elgin brand name was used from 1946 through 1964. West Bend was the manufacturer from 1946 through 1959. Sears contract did not expire with West Bend until May of 1963. It didn't stop them from changing manufacturers to McCulloch. The Elgin 2 horsepower built by West Bend was still being sold in the early 60's. McCulloch manufactured them from 1959 through 1969. 1959 was the beginning of the mixed production. In 1964 the Elgin brand name was change to Sears, but the outboard was still manufactured by McCulloch through 1969.
