Discount Marine Parts has one of the largest inventory of Scott-Atwater and McCulloch parts in the U.S. A few years back, we purchased all of the remaining factory parts from the McCulloch distributor in Arizona. We still have large quantities of most common wear parts, Gears, Pistons, Ignition, Carb Kits, Gaskets, etc. We have parts and service manuals for all models. We also have all the manuals for all brands made by Scott-Atwater and McCulloch. The Scott-Atwater outboard motor was founded in 1946, by C.E. Scott and H.B. Atwater of Minneapolis, Minnesota. Mr. Scott and Mr. Atwater owned a small tool making and punch press operation they started in 1932. During the years of 1935 through 1942 they had a contract to manufacture outboards for a Mr. DuMonte. These outboards were branded and sold under the Champion name. (See Champion Outboards) Mr. DuMonte had negotiated an agreement to sell his outboards through the Firestone Tire Company in 1939. Additional sales through this outlet pushed Champion outboard sales to the second largest in the United States, next to Evinrude.
During the war years of 1943 through 1945 the tool making and punch press operation was use for military work and no outboards were manufactured. After the war they lost their contract to manufacture outboards for Mr. DuMonte (Champion Outboard). In 1946 he decided to build his own factory and manufacture the Champion Outboard himself.
Firestone Tire Company decided to stay in the outboard sales market after the war. Awarding the manufacturing contract to the small tool making and punch press operation owned by Scott and Atwater. After forming Scott-Atwater, they introduced the first Firestone and Scott-Atwater in 1946.
In 1948 Scott-Atwater also manufactured the Corsair brand. It was distributed through the Skelly Oil Company and the Pure Oil Company. The Corsair was kept in the line in the coming years and was discontinued in 1957 under the McCulloch Corporation management.
Scott-Atwater didn't require dealers to maintain an exclusive franchise. This policy allowed them to have many dealer outlets and the brand soon became a household name in the post war period. This outboard was one of the first to offer a full gearshift and by 1950 this feature was on four models. In 1954 the Bail-A-Matic was introduced, the outboard had a second impeller for pumping water out of the boat.
The outboard continued enjoying success and in 1956 was sold to the McCulloch Corporation. The Scott-Atwater brand continued for a couple years and was shortened to Scott and later to Scott-McCulloch. In the about 1964 it was marketed as McCulloch.
In the coming years McCulloch would transform the old Scott-Atwater with many new innovations and would manufacture their outboard under many different brands. The story continues on the McCulloch home page.
Hard core parts for these outboards are getting more difficult to find as time goes on. Many older outboards used common Ignition and Carburetor venders for that period. Discount Marine Parts has Ignition and Carburetor repair kits for most all of these older outboards. If we don't have what your looking for, we have many sources to locate your part. Obviously some parts are just not available. We can sometimes find it used and often we have the part made if there is enough demand. Discount Marine Parts has a large inventory of parts for most brands of American made Outboards, Inboards and Sterndrives. We also have most parts and service manuals available.
